Port (grain, timber, fruit, fish) of the
state of Washington, USA, situated between
Puget Sound and Lake Washington; population
(1980) 493,846, metropolitan area (with
Everett) 1,601,000. It is a centre for the
manufacture of jet aircraft (Boeing), and
also has shipbuilding, food processing, and
paper industries. First settled 1851, as the
nearest port for Alaska, Seattle grew in the
late 19th century under the impetus of the
gold rush. It is named after the Indian
Sealth.
